7 Tips on How to Get Rid of Spiders

Around the world, there are about 35,000 different species of spiders.

Do you feel like they’re all inside your house and turning your house into their webbed paradise?

An infestation of spiders can be a scary experience. However, you don’t have to live with them.

Here’s how to get rid of spiders from your home.

1. Turn Off Your Outdoor Lights

Lights normally attract insects, and a spider’s favorite meal is insects. If there are a lot of insects around your home, you’ll also be attracting all the spiders nearby as well.

If you don’t need to keep them on, try turning off your outdoor lights at night. When you go to bed, make sure that you turn off all lights that you aren’t using so you don’t create a gathering place for any insects that are inside your home.

2. Make Sure Your House is Sealed

While you probably don’t have the Atrax Robustus spider (the deadliest in the world) crawling into your home, you should still make sure that your house is sealed to keep them out.

One of the best ways to get rid of spiders is by making sure they can’t get into your home in the first place. If spiders can find their way into your home, other pests and insects can also probably find it as well.

Go outside your home and do an inspection to make sure there isn’t any hole big enough for them to fit through.  If you do find any openings, you can try putting weather stripping or caulk on the opening or crack to keep them out.

Spiders normally exploit openings in the chimney, vents, gaps, and cracks in corners of the house, and doors and windows.

Make sure you check these places especially. If you’re not using the chimney flu, make sure that you close the flu, which will also save you utility costs as well.

3. Use White Vinegar

If the spiders are already in your home, there are still some natural remedies that you can use to try and keep them away.

You should make sure that you have some vinegar stashed away for cleaning and repelling insects.

A vinegar spray is common organic pest control. It works especially well for spiders and is harmless to humans.

The vinegar contains an acetic acid which has a sour odor and taste. The spiders are sensitive to this and will want to stay away from it.

To make the spray, you have to mix vinegar and water into a spray bottle. You can then spray it around your home, but you should make sure you concentrate on the kitchen and any entrance where the bugs may come in.

It may smell at first, but it’ll be unnoticeable for humans once it dries.

4. Try Lemon Peels

Another organic option that you can try is using lemon peels. Spiders absolutely hate anything citrusy, so lemon peels are the perfect, natural weapon to defeat them.

You can take some lemon peels and rub them all over your bookshelves, windowsills, corners in the ceiling, and anywhere else they normally hide.

If you strategically rub the lemon peels around certain areas in your home, you can actually get them to leave your home!

5. Organize and Clean Your Home

Another way to make sure that no spiders can make residence in your home is by cleaning and organizing it.

Spiders love creating their webs in cluttered, dark spaces. They’ll probably hide in spots that you normally don’t frequent. If you have an area that you never dust, you may have spiders there.

To get rid of the spiders, you can try dusting, vacuuming, organizing, and stacking anything.

You should also make sure that you take your recycling out frequently. Spiders also love to make homes in boxes, plywood, firewood, and other piles of cardboard.

When you dust your house, make sure that you move books, clothes, and random knick-knacks. If you normally dust around them, a spider may be happy living there.

You should also make sure that you remove any cobwebs that you see so that the spider may get frustrated having to constantly remake their home.

6. Keep Flies and Gnats Out

A spider’s main diet consists of small insects, and flies and gnats are the perfect dinner meal.

If you find that you have a lot of gnats and flies in your house, a spider may be feeding on all of them while you’re not looking.

To keep these insects out of your home, you should make sure that you have screens on your doors and windows so they can’t come in. You may also want to take the trash out frequently and don’t let any rotting food stay in your home.

7. Use a Commercial Spider Repellant

Lastly, if none of these solutions work, you may need to try using a commercial spider repellant.

This should be a last resort, but there are several spider killing sprays out there that you can buy. Try spraying them near the entryways where spiders may be coming in.

Don’t get a natural or organic spray killer because these normally aren’t as effective.
